B-R-E-A-K-I-N-G News!!! South-West Muslim Council Endorses Jonathan For Re-election. - Wonders shall never end

Muslim council in South-West has debunked insinuations that Yoruba Muslims are to vote for Buhari, describing such reports as “pure lie.”
The Secretary-General of the Muslim council, Mallam Hakeem Adelani, told Sunday Tribune that “Yoruba Muslims are very objective people who do not vote on religious sentiments.
"We are not goats or rams that you just march and sell in political market.
“Why should we vote Buhari? Why should we vote for Jonathan? What have both men done for Yoruba people? For us, we have seen Lagos –Ibadan express road.
If the man can complete that road alone, he has our support.
“Jonathan has done for Yoruba, what our son, Olusegun Obasanjo, failed to do for us. Our main airport in Ibadan is having a new look. Many power plants are in Yorubaland. Our railway is working. Jonathan has done well for the Yoruba,” he said.
“And let me tell you another reason Yoruba Muslims will back Jonathan. His deputy is a Muslim who grew up in Yorubaland and understands us so much.Buhari has picked a Christian from South-West as his deputy. He has snubbed the 55 per cent Muslims in Yorubaland,” he said.
Adelani disclosed that the council would soon commence a mosque to mosque campaign on why Jonathan is better than Buhari.
Alhaji Abdullahi Folorunsho a local Imam in Bodija, Oyo state in his reaction said that, Buhari has seen a typical Yoruba man as his enemy.
"What that man did to Yoruba Politicians in 1984 without trial after they overthrew Shagari is better not discussed and allowed the Hausa/Fulani Politicians that really looted our economy to go free or be on house arrest.
Alhaji Folorunsho added, "Yoruba youths should ask themselves, what have Buhari done in Yorubaland as Oil Minister, Head of State or as PTF Boss where he misappropriated near a N1trillion Naira".
"Buhari never sympathised with us when he instructed his supporters to kill 5 Yoruba NYSC serving in the North in 2011. No one heard from Buhari when Boko haram a group he has sympathy for, kill nearly 100 Beans traders in Maiduguri". The whole of S/West was ignored by Buhari when he was PTF head. We have to punish the wicked man with our votes

Osinbajo and the Showbiz Campaign

Political Notes

Let’s just say the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), is fast learning the art of politics and interestingly, the way of his people. This, of course, has become imperative in view of the task ahead. Obviously, there is no time for anyone to learn on the job, either in the realm of politics or governance. As such, for those who can’t hit the ground running, the turf is not for them.
This, perhaps, is why Osinbajo has been visibly active lately, leading the presidential campaign in a fashion that seems to catch the fancy of this age. If he is not hopping on a BRT bus (not the popular Molue) ostensibly to campaign, he is stopping by at The Palm, Lekki (not Balogun or Tejuosho market) to talk about the vision that is about to birth in the annals of the body polity.
Interestingly, much as the idea looks and sounds good, especially that it appears to fit into the expectations of this age, it still does not wear the reality and somber picture it is intended for. The reason for this is commonsense: neither time nor chance happened to any of those. It was a carefully orchestrated propaganda aimed at eliciting empathy.
Just about four years ago, a certain Dr. Goodluck Jonathan played up a similar narrative – told of how he had no shoes and became president of Africa’s most populous nation by sheer providence. Quite expectedly, he made it through as he was overwhelmingly voted for in that election. The story worked magic. But can such a narrative fly again with the same person let alone another individual in the name of change? That’s a puzzle for you to solve.
Osinbajo is brilliant, of a sound mind and evidently intelligent. But he obviously can do more than the acting that seems to now typify his campaign for obvious re-registration into the public’s consciousness. Political campaign is not the same as showbiz. He should please get more serious and not think the electorate is a circus show crowd.
It is trite to ponder if he ever deemed it fit before and even after leaving office to step into the ordinary man’s arena for whatever reasons.  Therefore, it is evident that he is doing it now for a reason and even if it is so, he still should not shove it down the throat of the people as if the public space is a waiting dumpsite for all manners of garbage each election year. A Professor Osinbajo can do better, certainly!

2015: Jonathan, Buhari Others Confirmed as Presidential Candidates

President-Goodluck-Jonathan.jpg-President-Goodluck-Jonathan.jpgWith the expiration of today's deadline for the substitution of presidential candidates for the February 14 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari are now confirmed as their political parties can no longer replace them as flag bearers of Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressive Congress.
This is because their fates as presidential candidates appear to have been sealed as‎ today is the last day for presidential candidates to withdraw from the contest and for their parties to field new candidates according to the electoral guideline set by ‎the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
With this, INEC would print their names on the ballot papers, whether or not any of them decides to opt out of the presidential election.
The same also applies for candidates ‎in the national assembly elections across the country.
However, the governorship and state assembly aspirants have up till, January 13, 2015 to either withdraw or have their parties file in their replacements.

Fani Kayode On Buhari's Party Primaries Victory.

Pa Mohammadu Buhari has emerged as the APC flagbearer and President Goodluck Jonathan has emerged for the PDP. Now the battle for the soul and future of our nation begins. The forces of light shall surely prevail over the forces of darkness and God's counsel alone shall stand over Nigeria. I stand with Jonathan. Let's get it on.

''Jihadi groups killed more than 5,000 people last month, with Iraq topping the league table of deaths, followed by Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria.
In 664 incidents recorded in November by the BBC World Service and researched jointly with King’s College London, the overall death toll was 5,042, or an average of 168 deaths per day and nearly twice the number of people who were killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks on America.
After Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria, Yemen was fifth in the deadly league table, tying with Somalia, with 37 incidents each''- DORO ADEBENTLEY 11 December, Facebook.

All this and some people still say they want Pa Buhari as President? 1] A man who said, only last year, that ''an attack on Boko Haram is an attack on the north''?
2] A man who said, in 2001, that he wants to ''spread sharia throughout the federation''?
3] A man who said, in 2001, that muslims should only vote for muslims''?
4] A man who said, in 2001, that ''why should christians be concerned when muslims cut off their limbs under sharia''?.
5] A man who said, in 2001, that ''after all the limbs that are being cut off are muslim ones and not christian so why should the christians bother about it''?

This is the man that some Nigerians are clamouring for to be their President? May God open their eyes and protect them from themselves. May He grant them wisdom and discernment. - Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.

My Wife Hasn’t Caused Me One Problem In 32 Years – Bishop Oyedepo

boThe President and founder of the Living Faith Church worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, has described his wife as a God-sent to him. According to City People Group, speaking during the ongoing Shiloh, Bishop Oyedepo said, “My partner of 38 years, joined as husband and wife for 32 years now. For 32 years, she has not caused me one problem, I’ve had no domestic concern ever!” Oyedepo has also described the current turbulent times and religious extremism the world is facing, as a sign of the end time.
He made this declaration during the opening service of his ministry’s annual Shiloh event, which started on Tuesday, based his statement on Biblical truths, which, according to him, are rifer more than ever before, alluding to the negative effect of ISIS in the Middle-East. In a message, entitled, “Heralding the era of Heaven on Earth,” the 60-year old preacher said, “We are in the end time; it is trying time for the world, and triumph for the church. It is a day of reproach and shame for the world.”

Okorocha Picks Imo APC Governorship Ticket After Losing Presidential

Okorocha-Rochas-APCImo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has picked the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in absentia as he was still in Lagos for the party’s National Convention which ended on Thursday evening.
Okorocha’s emergence as the party’s governorship flag bearer in the state came barely few hours after coming fourth in the just concluded APC presidential primary elections at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
During the Owerri event, which took place at the Imo International Conference Centre, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning, Uche Nwosu, who was secretly adopted as the APC governorship candidate by the party’s delegates, announced his withdrawal from the race.
Speaking before the ratification of the Governor’s candidature, ChannelsTV reports that the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. John Alamba, said that the party had the power to substitute any candidate that withdraws from the race.
Nwosu, in his brief speech said that his withdrawal from the race was based on personal and family reasons, adding that the interest of the party supersedes his personal ambition. He enjoined the party members to give same support and solidarity to the new candidate, Governor Okorocha.
Apart from the delegates, also present at the event were all the state executive of the Imo State All Progressives Congress, except the Chairman who was still in Lagos, members of the Okorocha’s cabinet and other state appointees.

Shinkafi, Ajibola emerge as APGA, PDP gov candidates for Zamfara, Kwara States

The National Secretary of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the party in Zamfara State.
Shinkafi was unanimously endorsed by all the delegates of the party during their primaries held at the Gusau Airport in the state capital.
In Kwara State, the Senator representing Kwara South in the National Assembly, Suleiman Simeon Ajibola also emerged the gubernatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state for the 2015 general elections.
Ajibola will slug it out with the incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed also from the area during the election.
However, the APGA election in Zamfara State was peaceful, also saw the emergence of contestants of various elective offices unopposed.
Speaking shortly after he was adopted, Abdullahi explained that he would do his best to ensure total transformation of the state if elected governor next year. He said that he joined the race in order to save the people of the state from the ruins brought upon it by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
According to him, the people of the state had for long been crying for change following the difficulties being encountered due to alleged poor leadership of the APC.
“I want to tell you that I have not joined this race to get enrich my self but to contribute my quota in bringing down the level of hardship and poverty faced by the majority of people. It is disheartening that despite the existence of government, our people are killed on daily basis, while a number of children of school age can not go to school due to lack of concern from the side of the government,” he said.
Abdullahi also assured the entire people of the state of his readiness and determination towards putting an end to joblessness which he said was one of the reasons why the rate of crime had increased in the state.
“So long as we continue to ignore our teeming youths roaming the streets without jobs, we will continue to have problems, and that is why my government will give more priority to this sector so that we can have responsible future leaders,” Abdullahi added.
He therefore asked the people of the state to assist him, so that, together the set goals would be achieved.

Buhari gives VP slot to Tinubu

Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), according  TheCable, has conceded the slot picking  of his running mate to Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party.
This has in effect diminished the chances of Chibuike Amaechi, governor of Rivers state, who was all along tipped to be the vice-presidential candidate. Further discussions are going to be held this weekend, but a quick decision may not be reached.
The party still has up till December 18 to submit the name of the nominee to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Buhari’s decision to give Tinubu the slot is apparently based on the voting population of the south-west which he is banking on to upstage the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election.
“Politics is not winner-takes-all. Tinubu worked round the clock to deliver a huge chunk of votes to Buhari in the primary, and it is only fair that he is honoured in return,” an aide to Buhari said.
Tinubu, TheCable can further report, has not foreclosed the choice of anyone as the VP candidate, but he is opposed to Amaechi – although the Rivers governor has made the biggest financial contribution to Buhari’s campaign.
“Rumours that Amaechi has been chosen as the running mate are not true in any form. The running mate will be announced soon.” The chieftain further  said “If the party exco settles for a Muslim/Muslim ticket, Tinubu himself will be the number one choice. If not, then Adams Oshiomhole stands the best chance among the rest.” He ruled out Babatunde Fashola, governor of Lagos, who is also a Muslim installed Oshiomhole, Edo governor, as the odds-on favourite for the running mate slot, slashing his chances from 8/10 to 8/9, while dropping Amaechi’s odds from 9/10 to 5/10. Here is a line-up of the TOP contenders

President Jonathan's acceptance speech at the PDP Presidential Convention 2014

Acceptance Speech by His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR On His Victory at the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2014 National Convention Eagle Square, Abuja Wednesday 10th - Thursday 11th December  2014 PROTOCOLS 1.                Mr Chairman, our dear delegates, today is another great day in the history of our great Party; The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and indeed in the history of our great Nation.  2.                Nothing gives me greater joy, as leader of our party, than such an opportunity as presented today, for direct interaction with so many enthusiastic and dedicated fellow party members, and may I add, all proudly dressed in our party colours and regalia. 3.                It is also my pleasure to be here as a delegate today and I welcome whole heartedly all our delegates, party members and all Nigerians, from across the country and beyond; including those joining us by television and online, as we gather here in the Eagle Square, to reaffirm the noble democratic traditions and foundations, that bind us together. 4.                I thank the Party and the Organizing Committee for a successful convention. I thank all the delegates for a smooth nomination process. 5.                Let me congratulate, the Chairman of our great Party, the game changer, Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Muazu. I have no doubt that the democratic process we have witnessed here today, and his confirmation as Party chairman, are both pointers to the consolidation of democracy in our country as a whole.  6.                There is no doubt that his commitment to the ideals of our party, his consistency and hard work, has helped to reposition the party. And today we are stronger, bigger, and more in tune with the yearnings of our people. Let me also congratulate Professor Wale Oladipo and Alhaji Adewale Adeyanju whose appointments as National Secretary and National Auditor, respectively, have been ratified at this Convention.  7.                Nigeria is undergoing great changes at this time, and also experiencing great challenges; so, political parties must rise above the fray, to provide hope and clear direction, to propel the development of our country. 8.                As expected in every contest, especially political contests, the journey to this convention has not been without issues in some constituencies. Indeed, Party Congresses from the ward to state levels, and the legislative and state primaries, have produced both triumphs and some misgivings. 9.                Without prejudice to various on-going resolution mechanisms, we will take steps, after the elections to review and refine the candidate selection procedures within our party. An appropriate committee will be set up to work on this, with contributions across board. 10.          I commend the efforts of the supervising and appeal committee members, who travelled across the country to conduct and oversee the primaries and congresses. I appreciate also the dedication of the various working committees and special committees engaged in organising and delivering all aspects of the election season programmes. 11.          Fellow delegates, dear party members, while we congratulate our candidates who have emerged at the primaries, we must reassure all our members, that our party remains a large, accommodating and responsible party.  12.          We will make sure that conflicts are amicably resolved and that the genuine interest of every member is respected and assured. 13.          As party members, we must be conscious of the responsibility we hold to our Nation. The political party is the vehicle for national organisation, and the PDP is the foremost political party in Nigeria. 14.          For the sake of the entire nation, we must, at this time, more than ever, stand together as one united party. We are all joint stake holders, this party belongs to all of us. 15.          What we have achieved today should be a lesson to all who care about Nigeria. What we have done exemplifies our unity. What we have done exemplifies our determination. What we have done exemplifies our purpose.  16.          We are a Party that accepts challenges. We are a Party that confronts those challenges. But above all, we are a Party that resolves challenges. And it is exactly these qualities that will lead us to victory.  17.          Distinguished Delegates, ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you as your humble servant, to accept your nomination as the Presidential candidate of our great Party, the PDP. 18.          Having placed great faith in me and chosen me as your candidate, I assure you, that I am truly honoured tonight, to lead another electoral contest. 19.          This will be a campaign, and an election, that will serve to consolidate our successes.  20.          I will give my all. 21.          I will not let you down. 22.          I will not fail the PDP. 23.          I will not fail you. 24.          Above all, I promise, I will not fail our great nation, Nigeria. 25.          This convention shows that we are ready. 26.          The PDP is ready. 27.          Nigerians know we are ready. 28.          And today in Abuja, we begin the next phase of our mission. 29.          Our mission is to secure Nigeria’s future. 30.          First of all, let me give gratitude to God Almighty who has sustained the nation. 31.          There is much to say, but permit me some special words of gratitude. These last four years have not always been easy, but through it all, my wife has effortlessly taken care of our home. So to you, my companion and my foremost supporter, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  32.          I also want to thank, the Vice President, my brother, Arch Namadi Sambo, and his dear wife. You have both provided loyal support and commitment to this presidency; working with you for our people, has been a pleasure. 33.          The work and progress recorded these past four years has been possible because we have had the best team possible. The Ministers, Advisers, Assistants and staff that have formed the Transformation team, have shown great dedication, creativity and loyalty.  34.          They have put in extra hours when necessary, and always gone the extra mile to ensure delivery. Today, I thank them fervently for their patriotism and hard work. 35.          Our Party, the PDP, has been the foundation of our Transformation Agenda. I thank the Chairman and Party Executive at all levels, the Board of Trustees and National Working Committee, the PDP Governors Forum, Federal and state legislators, Secretariat Staff and volunteers, across the country. You have played your part well, and I am indeed very grateful. 36.          It is not a mere coincidence that our National Convention this year starts on the same day as the United Nations World Human Rights Day. This government, led by our Party, has made the respect of human rights and individual freedoms, the cornerstone of our administration. 37.          I did say during my declaration on November 11, 2014, that we are proud that no Nigerian has been exiled or imprisoned on our watch, for holding contrary views. We must ensure that we continue to water the tree bearing the fruits of freedom, for our beloved people. 38.          In the last 16 years, the PDP has kept faith with the Nigerian people by promoting and projecting a united nation, under God. We have united our people around common national goals for the good of our citizens and the development of our nation.  39.          Through its years of office, our great Party, the PDP created the Anti-corruption agencies, that is, the EFCC and the ICPC, the Excess Crude Account, the Pension Reforms, Fiscal Responsibility Regime, the Sovereign Wealth Fund and various privatization programmes.  40.          We initiated Debt Relief, the Amnesty Programme, the Presidential Jobs Creation Board, Power Sector Reforms and the National Infrastructure Master-plan; the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan, the National Automobile Policy, the Freedom of Information regime, the Nigerian Mortgage Refinancing Company, and the Infrastructure Bank, amongst others. 41.          At the advent of democracy in 1999, Nigeria’s GDP was 35.9 billion US dollars. Today, it is 510 billion US dollars - and we have become Africa’s biggest economy.  In 1999, our debt to GDP Ratio was 93.1%. Today, it is 13.6 % of which external debt to GDP ratio is 1.89%. 42.          As at 1999, only 400,000 telephone lines were active in our country. Today, we have about 120 million lines, which have created many more jobs for our youths. 43.          This administration is also working to revitalize our insurance industry. Compared to other emerging economies, our insurance industry has not achieved its full potential. Today, only 3 million of our citizens are insurance policy holders, and overall insurance penetration is less than 0.5 percent of our GDP. We want to transform this sector, just as we have done for our banking sector and our pensions industry.  44.          Our goal is to grow the total insurance premiums in our country from 300 billion naira currently to 1 trillion naira in the next three years. And to increase the number of direct jobs created in this sector from about 30,000 people today to over 100,000 people in the next few years. 45.           My brothers and sisters, the PDP as a party has delivered on its promise.  In the last decade, it has seen to the largest expansion of the middle class in Africa.  Certainly, our Party has a rich history of enduring legacies.   46.           For those who defected from the PDP, I enjoin you to tell the truth in your campaigns. Many of the developments in your States were initiated by the PDP. So be honest with the voters and give credit where it is due.    47.           In adopting the umbrella as our symbol, we have become the umbrella of the nation.  Our politics has not been defined by our differences, but in forging the bond of oneness. 48.           After our victory at the polls in 2011, we articulated a TRANSFORMATION AGENDA, which we have faithfully implemented. The agenda has created the framework of our desire to promote and deepen access to economic and social benefits, through equal opportunities. 49.          The Transformation Agenda is helping to secure Nigeria’s future. Thanks to this Agenda we have remained focused, calculated and measured in our decision-making. We have focused on sustainable gains, rather than quick fixes. We have remained committed to our national maxim of Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress.  50.          Today, it is to our collective credit as a nation, that in spite of our challenges, our unity remains solid. All across our nation, the positive gains of the Transformation Agenda are being progressively enjoyed by our people.  51.          During this campaign, some office seekers will say it is “time for change”, but while they were changing from one name to another and from one party to the other, we had already brought change to Nigeria.   52.          My dear delegates, 53.          Has change not come to our railway system? 54.          Has change not come to our airports? 55.          Has change not come to our roads network? 56.          Has change not come to our agricultural sector? 57.          Has change not come to our electoral process? 58.          Has change not come to Almajiri education? 59.          Is change not coming to the power sector? 60.          Distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen, what we need today is to consolidate on our gains in order to secure our future. 61.          Our focus now must be on the future and not on the past. We have challenges but we are determined to overcome them. And this we will.   62.          These last four years, my priority has been in building a strong and stable economy. We have created the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. These are essentials for securing Nigeria's future. 63.          Back in 2008 and 2009, the country faced strong economic challenges arising from unstable oil prices, but we confronted it consciously and overcame.  As the economic challenges of oil price-fall, looms in the months ahead, Nigeria needs tested hands that will provide certainty, in an uncertain world. We have a strong and capable economic team, which has already worked out strategies to manage the oil price volatility and curtail its effects. 64.          Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, our fight against corruption is on course.  Our systematic efforts have been acknowledged   and we will do more in the coming years.  Corruption degrades development; we will continue this fight, without compromise. 65.          In the past four years we have run our administration with respect for the principle of separation of powers between the different arms of government. The judiciary and the legislature have independently and introspectively pursued their own reforms and greater self-expression.  66.          With a fresh mandate, we shall push for increased intra-party and bi-partisan harmony, within the legislature, and between the executive and the legislature. The duty of national development must never be hindered by the over-politicization of interests; this is what we owe our people, and our nation. 67.          Dear party faithful, beyond security and corruption, there exist environmental challenges, such as desertification, which is threatening the lives of our people, especially in the frontline states of Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara. We have responded most appropriately by implementing the GreatGreen Wall Programme for which we have released over 16 billion Naira. 68.          Our determination to provide a buffer of greenery that will stop the advancement of the desert and reverse the many losses of farmlands and grazing grounds, streams and aquatic life, among others, remains strong. Similar programmes are being implemented to save communities from erosion in the West, East, and the South-South parts of the country. 69.           On my watch, the security of all citizens shall continue to be of utmost priority.  With the exception of the civil war, never before in the history of our country have we faced the level of threat we see today.  I assure all Nigerians that this Government will continue to do whatever is required to provide the security we deserve. It is encouraging that the security situation is improving, and by the grace of God, elections will be conducted in all states of the federation. 70.           I call on all Nigerians, irrespective of party or belief, to join me in this fight against insurgency and terror.  We must be united. Bickering and quarrels only serve to send the wrong signals to terrorists and insurgents, that we are divided in this fight. More importantly it can also demoralise our dedicated and brave armed forces. This would be wrong. For this reason, we must remain united.  71.          I believe that together as a people and with God on our side, we shall defeat terror and emerge an even stronger nation.   72.          The experience in many countries shows that there may be a tendency for the escalation of violence in an election year. We must not succumb to blackmail.  We must be vigilant – every one of us. Only by united action, can we defeat terrorism.  73.          I salute our gallant armed forces and security agencies who are doing their best to keep our people safe. We shall continue to ensure that they have the best in terms of equipment, training and conditions.  I appeal to our countrymen and women to provide them with the fullest support, and not to fall victim to those who fan the embers of terror. 74.          As a political party, we must rededicate ourselves to the work of securing our future. We are the party of the people, and not just the elite.  We must lift the poor out of the depth of want, onto the ladder of prosperity.  We will work to ensure that no child suffers from basic needs. We must create equal opportunities for women and the physically challenged.  We must give a voice to all Nigerians.   75.          And we can do all this!  Nigeria is not a land of despair. We are a people who show commitment and unity of purpose. Just look at how we stood up to the Ebola Virus Disease.  We are a hard-working nation. And we will go from strength to strength. 76.          Our best days are before us, not behind us. We must continue to move forward. 77.          In accepting your nomination as flag bearer for the Presidential Election, I once more accept the challenge to serve our party and nation. I will continue the work we have begun with the Transformation Agenda.  78.          I will work to secure Nigeria’s future. I will serve with humility and moderation, with simplicity and forthrightness; with openness and inclusiveness, and with firmness and strength. I urge all Nigerians to support me, to finish what we started together. 79.          Fellow citizens, what we need, more than anything else, is to secure our country’s future, by building, and not by destroying.   80.          We can continue to build upon the foundations we have laid so far, we can continue with our economic progress, we can continue improving our infrastructure, we can continue delivering better health care, we can continue to improve our agriculture and we can continue to safeguard individual liberties and freedoms. 81.          The choice before Nigerians in the coming election is simple: A choice between going forward or going backwards; between the new ways and the old ways; between freedom and repression; between a record of visible achievements and beneficial reforms - and desperate power-seekers with empty promises.   82.          Fellow Delegates, dear Party members, so much is at stake. Let me remind everyone – party leaders, mobilizers, members, men, women and youth – that the hard work has only just started.   83.          As your Presidential candidate and Party leader, I hereby commission all delegates and party faithful, as my campaign mobilizers, to take our message of unity and development back to your respective states and communities, and to ensure victory for all candidates of the PDP in the forthcoming elections. Working Together, we will do it! 84.          Our political opponents shall assail us with the fury of their desperation to win power.  They will use every means – intimidation, false accusations, hostile media and more. Do not descend to their level. We must stay focused on the mission at hand – to secure Nigeria’s future.  85.          Let me emphasise again, that nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. We must eschew violence, even in the face of the most outrageous acts of desperation.  86.          We must make sure our supporters have their voter’s cards.  We must get them motivated and eager to make their mark. It will be a mark for our children. It will be a mark for a stronger economy. A mark that will secure Nigeria’s future. 87.          So my dear Party Men and Women, let us take this campaign to every Nigerian, every home and every community. 88.          We will campaign in peace. 89.          We will campaign with hope in our hearts. 90.          We will campaign on the facts and the truth. 91.          We will campaign with issues and ideas. 92.          We will campaign on our record of performance. 93.          We will campaign to win. 94.          Mr. Chairman, Distinguished delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen, 95.          Let me at this point invite to join me on this podium, the Chairman of our great party, Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Muazu; the Chairman of our Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih; the Senate President, Senator David Mark and his wife; my dear brother, the Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo and his wife, and particularly, my dear wife, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. 96.          I seize the opportunity of this occasion to formally announce that as we commence the campaign for the 2015 Presidential elections, Architect Mohammed Namadi Sambo, a loyal and tested partner, a dependable, trustworthy gentleman and a true patriot will be my running mate and Vice Presidential candidate once again. 97.          With your continued support and the blessing of God Almighty, Vice President Sambo and I will campaign together to win another resounding victory for our great party in the coming elections. 98.          God bless you all. 99.          God bless our great Party, the PDP  100.     God bless Nigeria 101.     I thank you all.

KPMG: Nigeria’s high speed rail is ‘world-class’

Nigeria’s high speed rail project initiated by President Goodluck Jonathan has been rated among the global top 100 world-class infrastructure projects by KPMG.
The rail will connect Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Warri, Bauchi, Abuja, and Port Harcourt and will cost the country $13 billion, much of which will be financed with a loan from the Export Import Bank of China.
The China Railway Construction Corporation has secured the contract to build the 3,218-kilometre network, which will be digitally operated using fibre-optic cables, radio communication and wireless services. The project is designed to cover 54 stations and will take 25 years to build.
In the report, The Infrastructure 100: World Markets Report, the KPMG panel of judges said the project “will remove heavy freight from Nigeria’s stressed roads, could save the country millions on road maintenance”.
Other African projects on the list are: Khi Solar One (South Africa), Square Kilometer Array (South Africa), PRASA Rolling Stock (South Africa), Kudu Gas Field and CCGT Project (Namibia),Trans-Saharan Natural Gas Project (Nigeria to Algeria), Mombasa-Kigali Railway (Rwanda), KivuWatt (Rwanda), Jinja Bridge (Uganda), and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Terminal (Kenya).
In its note, KPMG said the report highlights key trends driving infrastructure investment around the world. A global panel of industry experts identifies 100 of the world’s most innovative, impactful infrastructure projects showing how governments are coming together with the private sector to overcome funding constraints to finance and build projects that can improve quality of life – both solving immediate needs and planning for future societal demands.
The report looks at infrastructure based on the dynamics of four key markets: Mature International Markets (like Canada, Australia, and UK), Economic Powerhouses (including the US and BRIC countries), Smaller Established Markets (like Chile, Sweden, New Zealand, Korea and South Africa), and Emerging Markets (including a number of economies in Africa).

SENATE PASSES TWO CONSOLIDATED SON BILLS FOR SECOND READING
The Senate on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 passed for second reading two consolidated bills. The bills passed are: 1) A Bill for an Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) Act CAP S9 LFN 2004 for the purpose of providing additional functions for the organization, increase penalty for violation; and for other related matters incidental thereto (H.B.153), sponsored by the Senate Leader, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba. 2) A Bill for an Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Standards Organization of Nigeria Act CAP S9 LFN 2004 for the purpose of providing additional functions for the Organization, increase penalty for violation and for other related matters incidental thereto (S.B.394), sponsored by Sen. Nenadi Usman. Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, Sen. Nenadi Usman said the legislation is intended to ensure the standardization of products and services, undertake investigation on complains lodged by consumers on poor standard of products, regulate the inflow of substandard goods into the country, enhance the ability of SON in the discharge of its mandate, ensure compulsory assessment scheme of all products produced in the country or imported into the country to ensure conformity with international best practice before such goods get to the consumers and prescribe severe punishment for violators as well as recall products that could be harmful to human health. Other law-makers who contributed in favour of the bills include Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, Sen. Bernabas Gemade, Sen. Ibrahim Gobir, Sen. Chris Ngige and Senate President David Mark. Sen. Mark noted that Standards Organization of Nigeria is truly a very important institution vested very significant functions that need to be reviewed from time to time to check the distribution of substandard products in the country. The bills have been referred to the Senate Committee on Investment to report back to the Chamber in two weeks. Also, the Senate has adjourned sitting till December 16, 2014 to allow law- makers participate fully in the forthcoming political parties primaries and national conventions billed for 7th to 10th December.

Libel: Court orders IGP, SSS, to confiscate Obasanjo`s book

An FCT High Court on Wednesday ordered the Inspector General of Police, Director-General of State Security Services and Controller General of Nigeria Customs Services to confiscate Obasanjo`s book from public vendors.
Justice Valentine Ashi, gave the order after former President Olusegun Obasanjo allegedly went ahead to publish his book titled “ My Watch’’ in spite of a court order made on Dec. 5, restraining him from making the publication.
“ I am of the view that the defendant having gone ahead to publish the book, he should therefore show cause within 21 days of the order served on him on why he should not be punished for contempt of court.
“ The Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of State Security Services and the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Services are hereby directed to recover the book from sales vendors,” the Judge ordered.
He directed that the book should be kept with the registrar of the court pending the determination of the suit.
Ashi also restrained the defendant from further printing, publishing or circulating the book “ My Watch’’ which, he said “touches on the subject matter of the suit before the court.’’
Earlier, counsel to Obasanjo, Mr Realwan Okpanachi, told the court that the book was published before the order was granted.
Okpanachi argued that the book had been in circulation since November and the order was made on Dec. 5.
The Counsel to Buruji Kashamu, Mr Alex Izinyo, SAN, submitted that the defendant`s application was a calculated attempt to deceive the court.
Izinyo argued that the defendant admitted in his motion papers that the book was published on Nov. 10 and in another paragraph, it was also stated that the book was published on Nov. 2.
“My lord, the burden of proof lay with the defendant to show the court three volumes of the book,’’ he said.
Ashi adjourned to Jan. 13 and 14, 2015, for hearing of the substantive case.
The plaintiff Mr Buruji Kashamu, had earlier dragged former President Olusegun Obasanjo before the court for libel.
Kashamu alleged that the former addressed him as ex-convict in the letter he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan titled, “Before it is too late’’.

Elumelu unveils $100m entrepreneurship programme

Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mr. Tony Elumelu, has launched a $100 million program to support and promote entrepreneurship across Africa.
Elumelu first hinted of the programme in August at the 2014 US-Africa Leaders Summit held in Washington. He said that the initiative, which he described as “a $100 million endowment to encourage the maturation of African entrepreneurs”, is intended to help up to 10,000 budding African entrepreneurs to develop their ideas into sustainable businesses.
“We will be providing $100m to 10,000 entrepreneurs across Africa through the soon-to-be-launched Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme. By democratising access to opportunity, with an emphasis on tapping into the talent of Africa’s young people, this programme strives to “institutionalise luck”, which is a key factor in the success of any entrepreneur,” he stated.
Seed capital and mentoring
Specifically, the programme is to provide 1,000 entrepreneurs a year for the next 10 years with seed capital of $5,000 and additional returnable capital of up to $5,000. According to Elumelu, by making half of the money returnable, programme participants are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility. “I want to make sure there is some spirit of accountability,” he added.
The application process will begin in January 2015 with the announcement of the first 1,000 participants expected by the end of March. In order to be eligible for the initial $5,000 seed capital, successful applicants will have to go through a 12-week online mentoring and training program.
Parminder Vir, Director of the entrepreneurship program, explained: “The business skills training program will give them tools they need to go out and physically implement the lessons they learn.”
The online program will draw on content specifically designed to address the challenges African businesses will face.
“During that stage they will have mentors to help them, as well as access to a curated online library to enable them to find information that is relevant to their business,” Vir added. At the end of the 12 weeks, the 1,000 start-ups will attend a three-day forum in Nigeria. “That event will sow the seed for intra-Africa trade, for pan-Africa trade,” she said.
Africa’s economic integration
Elumelu, promoting the long-term growth of intra-African trade is one of the key goals of the project. “Intra-African trade is quite low, partly because Africa was wired from colonial times to facilitate trade only with the rest of the world, and partly because of the nature of what we’re trading. We have raw materials but we don’t have the processing capacity to transform them into products that will be useful in Africa.
We hope that the successful entrepreneurs in this program will show interest in industrialisation of the continent.
That will help us produce more finished goods, which will encourage trade and also put pressure on political leaders to create economic zones, or to enable the movement of goods, people and payments that will facilitate intra-African trade,” he stated.
Elumelu acknowledged that the program is ambitious, both in its scale and complexity, and that it is unlikely all the entrepreneurs who join will emerge with successful businesses. “If we achieve 30 percent to 50 percent success rate we would have helped significantly in helping the development of the continent,” he added.
Job creation
Wiebe Boer, CEO of Tony Elumelu Foundation, said the businesses supported by the program are expected to create at least one million new jobs and generate $10 billion of new revenues.
Beyond the promise of receiving financing, mentoring and support, entrepreneurs have an additional incentive to apply – the chance of having their business noticed by Heirs Holding as a potential investment opportunity.
According to Elumelu: “Heirs Holdings is a pan-African private investment company. If we see very promising companies that need support, we can do that – through impact investing, through pure commercial investment, through financial support, or even through wider capital raising.”
Elumelu believes that the initiative will enable African entrepreneurs transform the continent. “In 2015 the African entrepreneur will emerge on to the global stage, as a new generation shows the world what those of us doing business in Africa have long known: that our continent is home to some of the most exciting and innovative entrepreneurial talent.
From advanced mobile-payment systems to new agricultural-insurance models, we are already seeing how entrepreneurship is transforming Africa. But in Africa, business growth alone is not the full story. It is perhaps not even the most important part. Entrepreneurship matters especially for its potential to transform society.
“For centuries, the continent was impoverished by the extraction of raw materials by colonial powers. Africa was unable to generate or sustain its own wealth, as it was forced to buy finished goods created with African resources at premium prices.
And it lacked basic infrastructure except for the roads and ports built to move exports. If Africa is to transcend that chapter of its history and realise its economic potential, it must first become self-sufficient – and the private sector is vital to this process.
“Imagine the same continent filled with businesses that can process crude oil into petroleum, cocoa pods into chocolate and cotton lint into fabric, all while retaining the finished-goods premium instead of sending wealth overseas.
As homegrown businesses meet social and economic needs by creating goods and services with an innate understanding of the local environment, they can bring private capital to vital infrastructure like road transport and power generation. And they can create jobs for Africans, which will in turn create an African middle class – a new generation of African consumers,” he stated.
